DOT/DMV

Before you buy a trailer make sure it is DOT and DMV approved. Two reasons, safety and DMV registration. Beware of sellers that say their trailer is a "Kit" and does not require a VIN. This is not true and you will not be able to register your trailer. No registration, no plates, no way to get to where you want to go!

Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) Requirements - 49 CFR 565

https://www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/CFR-2011-title49-vol6/pdf/CFR-2011-title49-vol6-part565.pdf

Description of the Safety Risk : Because unassembled trailer kits lack certain labeling, an owner may overload the trailer, thereby creating a risk of loss of vehicle control, risk of wheel or tire failure, and/or a risk of a vehicle crash. In addition, because trailer kits are not assigned unique vehicle identification numbers (VINs), owners may not be able to be properly notified of future safety-related defects or noncompliance issues related to motor vehicle safety. In addition, owners may not be able to properly register the trailer kits per state guidelines.
